Obito Uchiha (うちはオビト, Uchiha Obito) is a former chūnin-level shinobi from Konohagakure and member of Team Minato who was thought to have died at the Kannabi Bridge during the Third Shinobi World War. Following a tragic death, Obito donned a mask and began operating under the guise of Madara Uchiha, and later as Tobi (トビ, Tobi), becoming an international criminal and the benefactor for the Akatsuki. He is one of the two remaining living Uchiha, the second and current jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails[3] and one of the main antagonists of the series.
Obito arrives as the entrance ceremony ends.
On the day that he was to enroll at the Academy, Obito had arrived late to the opening ceremony. Believing he was too late, he was relieved when Rin Nohara handed him his orientation-documents. He eventually graduated at the age of 9 and was placed in Team Minato with Rin and Kakashi Hatake under the leadership of Minato Namikaze. The team took part in the Chūnin Exams, where Obito arrived late for a second round in the Forest of Death having stopped to help an elderly woman.[4]
When Team Minato ran across an enemy team, Obito attempted to impress
Rin with the Uchiha clan's fire technique, but ended up choking on the
candy the elderly woman had given him and was soon defeated by Might Guy.
He trained extensively between the second and third round and told Rin
his dream of becoming Hokage; however, he was eliminated from the exams
in another bout with Guy, who was then beaten by Kakashi, allowing him
to rise to the rank of chūnin.[4] Obito did attain the rank some years later at the age of 11.
Main article: Kakashi Gaiden Team Minato.
During the Third Shinobi World War, Kakashi was placed in charge of the team for a mission to destroy the Kannabi Bridge, which would hinder Iwagakure from using Kusagakure
as a relief point. Before beginning the mission, Minato and Rin gave
gifts to Kakashi to celebrate his promotion to jōnin, though Obito had
forgotten thus straining an already poor relationship. Minato would soon
be called to the front lines, leaving the team to carry on the mission
alone. The three were then discovered by Iwa-nin and Rin was captured.
Kakashi elected to abandon Rin, believing it was more important to
finish the mission before concerning themselves with her safety. Obito
became enraged at the idea and insisted that they focus on her rescue.
When Kakashi refused, Obito left on his own, remarking that Kakashi was
worse than scum for abandoning his friends.[5][6][7]
Obito found the cave the Iwa-nin were using as a hideout, but before he could make much progress, was found and attacked by a camouflagedTaiseki.
Kakashi having a change of heart because of Obito's parting words,
arrived and saved Obito, shielding him from Taiseki's attack, but
damaging his left eye in the process. To save his team-mate, Obito
awakened his Sharingan
for the first time, allowing him to see through Taiseki's camouflage
and kill him. The two found and released Rin from her restraints,
prompting Kakkō to bring the cave down
around them. As they made their escape, Kakashi's limited vision
greatly hindered him, and when Obito noticed he was about to be crushed
by a falling boulder in his blind spot, he pushed him out of the way and
became trapped under the rubble in his place, crushing the right half
of his body. With no way to escape, Obito accepted his fate and made an
offering: to give Kakashi his left Sharingan as an apology for
forgetting to get him a present earlier.[8][9] Obito trapped beneath the boulder.
Rin performed the transplant and once the procedure was finished,
Kakashi used his new Sharingan to kill Kakkō. The Iwa reinforcements
quickly began to further compress the rubble
forcing Kakashi and Rin to leave Obito behind. As the rocks tightened
around him, Obito lamented that he had finally became friends with
Kakashi and failed he couldn't confess his feelings for Rin. Afterwards,
Minato rescued Kakashi and Rin and Obito was believed dead, his name
marked in Konoha's memorial.[10][11] A heavily bandaged Obito meets Madara.
However in actuality, Obito was rescued by an elderly Madara Uchiha who found the younger Uchiha when the cave-in brought him to one of his tunnels leading to the Mountains' Graveyard.
Though his Sharingan was miraculously unharmed, the entire right side
of his body from the neck down was completely destroyed, prompting
Madara to reconstruct half of his body using parts of Hashirama's living clone.[12][13]
Telling Obito that he now owes him his life, Obito instead declared he
wanted to return to Konoha and be with his friends. Madara informed him
that his new body would prevent him from becoming a shinobi again, and
that in the end it wouldn't matter. Madara preached about the harsh
nature of reality and how he has a plan to change the world. Still
unconvinced, but otherwise unable to leave, Obito remained in the
Mountain Graveyard to recuperate. During his recuperation, he met and
became friends with White Zetsu and one of his many clone brothers while undergoing rehabilitation in order to use his new limbs.[14][15]
As Obito was finally getting used to his new limbs, White Zetsu alerted him to the fact that Kakashi and Rin were surrounded by Kirigakure-nin
and in danger. Obito tried to punch through the wall blocking the
Mountain Graveyard, but ended up destroying his right arm and barely
breaking the wall. Spiral Zetsu, wanting to help and sure Madara would
allow it, encased Obito with his body which gave him the strength to
break the wall. As Obito prepared to leave, he told Madara he had no
intention of returning, but thanked him for saving his life. Madara in
turn told him that he will return willingly and thank him truthfully.
Using Spiral Zetsu to locate his friends, he learned that Minato was
once again absent. On his way, Obito's left eye socket caught a glimps
of what his left eye was actually seeing, but dismissed it as a panic
thought. Upon reaching the battlefield, he was shocked to see Kakashi
had run Rin through with his Chidori.[16][17] Obito stands amongst the slaughtered Kiri-nin.
As Rin died before both of them, their Sharingan matured into the Mangekyō Sharingan
and Kakashi passed out quickly afterwards. The Kiri-nin attempted to
claim Rin's body for intel, prompting an enraged Obito to slaughter them
with a combination of his Kamui ability and Wood Release
sprouting from his body. After killing all the Kiri-nin and ignoring
Kakashi completely, Obito cradled Rin's body and, with Madara's words
ringing in his mind, vowed he would create a world where she was alive
again.[18][19]
Moving the Plan Forward
Obito and Zetsu put Madara's Eye of the Moon Plan into action.
With new conviction, he returned to Mountains' Graveyard, and agreed
with Madara's conclusion that the reality they lived in was worthless
and should be destroyed. He vowed he would create a new reality where
he, Rin, and Kakashi would be together again. Pleased, Madara told Obito
the details of the Eye of the Moon Plan, the secrets of the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, and the role Nagato would play with his Rinnegan.
He would go on to teach Obito much of his skills and knowledge; this
included various kinjutsu, advanced Uchiha techniques, the Yin–Yang
Release, and the power of the Rinnegan. Before passing, Madara also
created Black Zetsu by pouring his will into White Zetsu and also left
part of his will in the chakra receiver which extends from the statue's
navel. Disconnecting himself from the Demonic Statue, Madara told Obito
that until the day he was revived, he would be Madara Uchiha and must work to bring the Eye of the Moon Plan to completion.[20]
Obito and Zetsu travelled to Amegakure to meet the Ame Orphans,
who were sceptical at Obito's claim that he was Madara and his plan to
make a world where everyone wins despite Nagato wanting to know about
his powers. Yahiko
brushed Obito off and told him to stay away from them. Obito, however,
stated that he would return to that spot everyday until they understood
and came to him willingly.[21] Eventually, after the death of Yahiko, Nagato would become Pain and join Obito, this beginning the current incarnation of Akatsuki.
From this point, Obito's actions are largely unknown. As Tsunade
speculated years later, the reason Obito adopted his name was to take
advantage of the power it invoke in peoples' fears of the legend
himself.[22] Because of the many infamous acts Madara carried out during his lifetime (such as acquiring an Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan),
few are surprised that Madara could still be alive after such a long
time. They take the crimes that Obito commits under Madara's name as
further confirmation that he is really Madara, as only Madara would be
capable of such deeds. Obito also possesses knowledge of things that
only the real Madara would know, further giving him credence.[23] Obito and Minato clash.
Twelve years before the start of the series, having infiltrated Konoha, Obito learned that Kushina Uzumaki, the Nine-Tails' jinchūriki and Minato's wife, would be giving birth.[24] Obito knew that this would cause the seal keeping Nine-Tails contained within her to weaken.[25] Intending to use the Nine-Tails, Obito tracked her down and took the newborn Naruto Uzumaki hostage to keep Minato from interfering. Once he extracted the beast, Obito placed the tailed beast under his control and ordered it to destroy Konoha.[26] Using Kamui
to keep Minato from going to the village's defence, keeping his true
identity hidden while reaffirming his ambitions, Obito engaged Minato
before being hit by a Rasengan and branded with Minato's Flying Thunder God Technique, to which Obito didn't know would never disappear.[27] Wounded with Minato's Contract Seal
disrupting his control over the Nine-Tails, Obito fled while vowing to
regain the tailed beast, and declared that he still had other plans.[28][29] Obito's flame-pattern mask.
Eight years after the Nine-Tails' attack, the Uchiha clan who had
been ostracised and placed under heavy suspicion for the attack as the
full story of the event died with Minato and his wife, Obito infiltrated
Konoha to rekindle the flames of war. He was found by Itachi Uchiha first, who thought he was Madara and convinced Obito to spare the village in exchange for helping to wipe out the Uchiha clan, to which he complied.[30][31] Around that time, Obito also met with Danzō Shimura for unknown reasons.[32] At some point in time, Obito also took control of the Fourth Mizukage, in effect making him the "real" Mizukage of Kirigakure. Kisame Hoshigaki
was one of the few Kirigakure ninja to know of his manipulation of the
Fourth yet helped Obito in his quest to bring about an end to the "world of lies".[33]
Later on, Obito abandoned his name, calling himself Tobi in order to
join the Akatsuki as Zetsu's subordinate to establish and hide himself
among their ranks before finally putting Madara's plan into motion.
Personality
Obito aiding an elderly villager.
In his youth, Obito was constantly late, which, more often than not,
was due to the good deeds he had stopped to do, such as aiding the
elderly.[34] Having made it a point in his life to do so, he noted that he knew all the elderly persons in Konoha,[35] stopped once on his way to the Chūnin Exams to help an elderly woman carry her luggage,[36] and even comically offered to clean Madara's nether regions when he met him.[37]
Obito was also easily moved to tears, which he always insisted was
because he had gotten something in his eyes despite wearing goggles.
Obito was in love with Rin; but his feelings were not mutual as Rin was
attracted to Kakashi instead. Frustrated by this, Obito envied Kakashi's
prodigious skills, and so constantly sought to surpass him. Although
these efforts usually ended in failure, he was able to spend time with
Rin while she treated his injuries. Ultimately, Obito would never get
the chance to reveal his feelings to Rin before his "death". As Kakashi
noted, besides his student's rivalry with Sasuke and one-sided feelings
for a female peer, Naruto shared other beliefs Obito had, such as his
desire to become Hokage and never abandoning comrades on the
battlefield. Even after "dying", Obito still cared deeply for his
friends and village, and immediately wanted to return to see them again.[38]
However, upon witnessing Rin's death at the hands of Kakashi, Obito's
determination and idealism shattered, and his personality forever
changed.
Obito mourning Rin's death.
By the time he became an adult, conditioned by Madara to continue his
work, Obito's personality changed drastically as he became extremely
focused, calm and serious. From his former loyalty and ideologies that
seems to be derived from the Will of Fire, he has now succumbed to his clan's Curse of Hatred
with the entire world itself as the object of his loathing. This
conviction became increasingly stronger to the point of Obito no longer
caring for his well being, stating he is nobody and that nothing in this world matters to him besides the Eye of the Moon Plan.[39][40]
This lack of empathy includes those close to him, attacking Minato and
Kakashi without hesitation, not caring if he ended up killing them as he
believes once the Eye of the Moon Plan is completed, he can just revive
them along with Rin. Only Obito's love for Rin remained, his desire to
create a world where she would exist together with him happily becoming
the motivation for his actions, a determination that proved strong
enough for him to resist the Ten-Tails' corruption of his consciousness and allowed him to assume control of its vast powers.[41][42]
He also became friends with Zetsu prior to his personality change,
being one of his few (if not only) genuinely positive relationships that
he maintained in his adulthood.
Despite Madara being the one who saved his life and gave him
purpose of the plan, Obito later disregarded his gratitude and openly
stated to Madara that he doesn't truly consider him an ally.[43]
He also took advantage of his own necessity in Madara's ultimate
ambition of becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki in order to plunge the
Allied Shinobi Forces into despair.[44]
Despite collaborating with Madara in the "Eye of the Moon Plan", Obito
never intended for Madara to become the Ten-Tails' host, instead
desiring to be the vessel of the beast himself.[45] Obito shows Kakashi how empty the world has left him.
While frequently arrogant about his own abilities and disrespectful
of those he considers as weak, Obito is not above giving praise to his
enemies, such as his former teacher Minato for being able to wound him[46] and Kakashi for his speed.[47] He also appreciated Itachi Uchiha, saying that Itachi never ceased to amaze him.[48] Obito also said that if he had not kept some secrets from Itachi, he would have died from the latter's last trap.
He has also forsaken his dream of being Hokage and ideals of
camaraderie, and derided Naruto for having both qualities. His own
disdain for his former dreams and belittlement of the morals of his
opponents was extended towards his former compatriot Kakashi, berating
him not to open his mouth so easily, Guy for always forgetting people's
faces,[49] as well as Minato for always being late during times of crisis.[50]
While Obito's words are often painfully striking, they often hold much
truth - he seems to enjoy debating with the enemy, severely shaking down
Naruto's determination after Neji's death, citing that Naruto has lost
many people, and that his beliefs would only lead to the deaths of all
who had acknowledged him;[51] Madara noted that Obito had become like his own past self.[52]
Although Obito does not blame Kakashi, he considers him trash like himself and anyone who has lived in the world for so long,[53]
a twist to his former belief that anyone who abandons their comrades
are lower than trash; he nevertheless seemed infuriated when Kakashi
mentioned Rin, and responded viciously.[54]
Obito has also taken up an aggressive and sadistic disposition, taking
the newborn Naruto hostage to release Kurama from his mother[55][56] and mercilessly killing Torune in order to be reincarnated moments later by using Fū as a sacrifice, all for the purpose of testing Kabuto's abilities.[57]
When first introduced as "Tobi", Obito acted the role of the
happy-go-lucky idiot, who annoyed most members of the Akatsuki,
particularly Deidara, who frequently attacked Obito in a comedic fashion. Kisame, on the other hand, appreciated Obito's ability to brighten up a gloomy organisation such as theirs.[58] In the anime, Obito is shown keeping up this charade even when no one was around.[59] Eventually, Obito discards his role as a fool after Deidara's death and used it one final time to distract the Eight Man Squad during Sasuke's battle with Itachi.[60][61][62][63]
Obito is a master of manipulation, either by subtly corrupting
his target's own goals, omitting parts of stories or events to his own
benefit as he did with Sasuke, or by appearing to share their beliefs.
This is best seen in the existence of the Akatsuki, its wildly-differing
members working together because they believe the organisation furthers
their own ends; in actuality they are mere tools that further Obito's
agenda as noted with the case of Nagato.
He often avoids responsibility for the influence he has over others,
claiming those he coerced and manipulated had followed him willingly. He
is also capable of great patience in attaining his goals, even
lecturing Sasuke on it at one time. However, his patience isn't
unlimited — at one point he chooses to discard caution and proceed with
his plan in a more aggressive and decisive manner, and when the Ten-Tails
is revived, he insists that the Eye of the Moon ritual be commenced
immediately. He is also prone to taking risks — revealing Itachi's true
history and motives with Sasuke to win his services was the first of
many gambles Obito takes. Even though Sasuke does not always live up to
his expectations, such as being unable to defeat the five Kage, Obito is nevertheless happy with his "development": his developing Sharingan and his growing isolation from all other allies.[64]
While he has threatened to kill Sasuke at times and even offered to
turn him over to others, Obito remained attached to Sasuke, at least
until he no longer had use for him.[65]
Indeed, when Obito and Sasuke were reunited on the battlefield the
former had attempted to kill the young Uchiha and his allies multiple
times after becoming the jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails, enforcing the fact
that Obito and Sasuke's past relationship was based on mutual gain
alone.
Obito has also recently acquired somewhat of a fixation on Naruto Uzumaki,[66] whom reminds him of himself in his youth.[67]
Because of the similarities between Naruto and himself as a child,
Obito expresses great anger towards Naruto for continuing to follow the
same ideology that he once possessed until Rin's death, considering him
incredibly naive and childish to still believe in such principles.
Nonetheless, the Uchiha displayed confidence that Naruto would one day
end up like him, and nearly succeeded in proving this point after having
the Ten-Tails kill his comrades right before his eyes. However, when
this ploy failed to change Naruto's way of thinking thanks to Hinata and Kurama's interference, Obito became rash and careless, accidentally allowing the Ten-Tails to be injured by Killer B after impulsively trying to use its power to kill more of Naruto's allies.[68][69]
Obito later questioned the young ninja why he was exhausting himself to
protect his friends if their deaths brought him closer to them.[70]
Naruto reversed this comment back toward Obito, proclaiming that having
no comrades at all was far more painful than losing them, which seemed
to provoke a slight reaction from the Uchiha. Afterwards, Kakashi
expressed concern that Obito was using Naruto as some kind of guinea
pig.[71]
Obito would later reveal that his intentions with testing Naruto's
morals so that he could asperse everything Naruto believes in, the same
ethics he himself once believed in as well.[72]
However, the more Naruto rebuffed his nihilistic views, the more
frustrated Obito became. Kakashi would later affirm the reason for this,
noting that Obito's Will of Fire had never actually burned out, and
that his actions and unwillingness to acknowledge this are causing him
inner turmoil that was tearing him up inside.
Appearance
Obito's face revealed during the Fourth Shinobi World War.
As a child, Obito had short, spiky, black hair and black eyes. He
wore a long sleeved blue uniform with metal plating on the part that
reached the back of his hands, as well as a blue jacket with an orange
collar and trimmings. The jacket was fastened to the rest of the outfit
by two buttons on the collar, and has the Uchiha clan crest at the back.
He also wore a white belt, shinobi sandals, the standard Konoha dark
blue forehead protector,
and a pair of goggles with orange lens connected to ear protectors.
After he was retrieved from Kusagakure, Madara replaced his destroyed
right side with artificial substance from Hashirama's living clone.
The right side of his face still remains heavily scarred in a manner
similar to deeply-aged wrinkles, and parts of his face on that side that
were reconstructed with Hashirama's DNA were paler in colour than his
usual skin tone.[73] During his rehabilitation, Obito grew his hair out, with the shape similar to that of Madara's.[74]
He eventually cut it back down to the short length as in his childhood.
During the Nine-Tails' attack he wore a long hooded black cloak and a
yellow-orange mask with a pattern that resembled his facial scar, some
time before the Nine-Tails' attack on Konoha. During his meetings with
Kisame,[75] and Itachi respectively,[76]
Obito was seen with long hair yet again, but he later cut it back to
its usual length which he wears to this day, he also wore Uchiha robes
with a sash on his waist and a yellow-orange mask that had a black flame
pattern, that resembled Amaterasu's flame.[77][78][79][80][81][82][83]
During his meeting with Kisame, he wore a dark blue kimono and with
most of limbs, including his entire chest and stomach heavily wrapped in
gauze; the only exceptions are his lack of gauze on his right arm and
hand.
Obito's wartime outfit.
As Tobi, Obito created an orange mask with spiral-pattern that only shows his right eye, a reminiscence of when Spiral Zetsu
encased him. Under his Akatsuki cloak, he wears a black long-sleeve top
that also covers his neck and chin, a pair of black gloves, and a pair
of dark-coloured pants along with the standard Akatsuki shoes and white
stirrups. On his waist, he wears a thick black belt with armour-like
metal plates attached to it. He wore the same metal plates on his
shoulders with a green scarf before becoming Deidara's partner.[84]
He wore blue nail polish on his fingers and toes (black in the manga).
As Tobi, he wore dark grey (black in the manga) gloves and Sasori's ring on his left thumb.
After he acquired the Rinnegan, Obito started wearing a new mask made of strong materials suited for the looming Fourth Shinobi World War. The mask was white with a purple tint that covers the entire upper-half of Obito's head with a design that resembled the Ten-Tails'
eye, consisting of a ripple-pattern with three tomoe around the centre;
two of these tomoe acted as the mask's eye-holes. He noted to Naruto
that this new mask had been specifically designed for combat, making it
very durable.[85] He also dons the Uchiha clan's traditional clothing during the Warring States Period.
This attire includes a pair of black pants and gloves, with a white,
presumed form-fitting shirt (black in the anime prior to episode 325)
underneath.[86]
Over this he wears a purple, high-collared, long sleeve mantle that
splits down the lower half and has the Uchiha crest on the back. Around
his waist he wears a simple, light-purple obi and a belt. Strapped to
his back, he carried a purple gunbai with black trimmings and black tomoe, connected to a black chain that ran up his right sleeve.[87] During his first meeting with Madara Uchiha during the Ten-Tails Revival Arc, he removed the chain attached to the gunbai and handed the fan back to Madara.[88] Obito after becoming the jinchūriki of the Ten-Tails.
After being forced to use the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique, Obito's hair turned white and the right half of his body turned completely black due to the influence of Madara's will, his appearance resembling Zetsu.[89]
Immediately after becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, Obito's body
undergoes a drastic transformation. He still possesses white hair, his
skin turns slate grey; and his Sharingan and Rinnegan in addition to ten protrusions coming from his back, five near his shoulder and five near his hips, as well as a black assortment of ten magatama
on his back; one large one, with a black Rinnegan-like pattern within
it, on his mid-back, and nine smaller ones, arranged in rows of three,
below it. In addition, the entire right half of his body has acquired a
unique black, scale-like pattern across it, replacing the scars he
acquired as a child, including repairing all the wounds inflicted on him
during the Fourth Shinobi World War.[90] When Obito managed to regain control of the Ten-Tails,
he undergoes yet another transformation. In this new form, the ten
protrusions on his back now form the collar and coattails of a haori.
Two horns also sprout from his forehead; the left smaller than the
right. Additionally, he gains six magatama markings across his chest.[91]
Abilities
Tobi with his jinchūriki Six Paths of Pain.
While a member of the Uchiha clan and becoming a chūnin
at the age of 11, Obito's overall prowess as a shinobi was average at
best and he was constantly behind his other classmates such as Kakashi
and Might Guy. In spite of this relatively slow development as a shinobi
in his younger years, Obito's talent began to surface after awakening
his Sharingan. He managed to quickly adapt and use advanced techniques
shortly after gaining them such as the Mangekyō Sharingan and the Wood
Release, proving to be a late bloomer. When fighting with him, Spiral Zetsu noted Obito's potential at this point and why Madara Uchiha had chosen him as his disciple.[92] With these new powers, Obito was able to slaughter a large group of jōnin and ANBU-level shinobi with ease.[93][94]
Later on, Obito was trained by Madara, who passed on most of his
techniques, knowledge and mindset to him. As an adult, Obito became an
extremely powerful shinobi with his abilities being a near-mirror image
of Madara's own, which in conjunction with his masked persona, lead
several top-level shinobi, even ones who had a previous history with
Madara, such as Ōnoki, to assume Obito was the legendary Uchiha, due to him being the only one with such skills and prowess.[95][96][97][98][99] As such, Obito has been able to hold his own against multiple Kage-level and S-rank shinobi, as well as perfect jinchūriki and other highly reputed shinobi on numerous occasions. In spite of all this, Obito generally avoids direct combat, with his fighting style being heavily reliant on his Kamui technique and his extensive use of summons and third parties.
Upon becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, (though the beast is still incomplete) he became so powerful that Hashirama Senju and Hiruzen Sarutobi, two men with the title God of Shinobi, remarked that Obito was now stronger than them.[100] Even Madara noted that at this point, his apprentice had become the same as Sage of the Six Paths.[90] With these new powers, he is able to easily overwhelm four Kage-level opponents working in conjunction with each other without effort nor difficulty.[101]
Jinchūriki Transformations
Main article: Jinchūriki Forms Obito's initial jinchūriki transformation.
Immediately after becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, Obito's body
undergoes a drastic transformation. His hair becomes white, his skin
colour changes to slate grey; the skin on the entire right side of his
body becomes scaly, on his back, ten protrusions appear (five on the
upper body and five near his hips) as well as a black unique pattern of magatama
on his back; one large one, with a black Rinnegan-like pattern within
it, on his mid-back, and nine smaller ones, arranged in rows of three,
below it.[90]
In this new, empowered form, Hashirama Senju and Hiruzen Sarutobi themselves noted gravely that Obito was more powerful than even they are.[102] Both Killer B and Gyūki
also noted that Obito is stronger than the Ten-Tails itself while using
this form, due to its power being more focused in his human body. Upon
completing the transformation, it apparently healed all of Obito's
previous wounds, and even the Flying Thunder God Technique's formula mark placed on his back, which was supposed to be irremovable, disappeared.[103] However, as the new jinchūriki, Obito did not have complete control of the Ten-Tails,
characterised by a loss of intelligence as he was barely able to
recognise his own name and his body becoming distorted and severely
bloated at one point.[90][101] Obito has also displayed the ability to float in mid air after becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki.[104]
He gains a dramatic boost in speed demonstrated when he was able
to destroy portions of Hashirama's wood clone and the reincarnated
Tobirama on the battlefield,[90] and was even able to land a surprise attack on his former teacher, a man renowned for his quickness.[105] He could also react and contemptuously block Amaterasu despite the technique's sheer speed.[106] His strength has also increased to the point where he can demolish a Susanoo
ribcage with nothing more than brute strength. Likewise, his durability
is also increased, as he emerged unharmed from Tobirama Senju's set of chain explosions.[101] He can create chakra arms from the spiky protrusions on his back, which are capable of breaking even Hashirama's Sage Art: Gate of the Great God and the barrier erected by the four Hokage.[107] Obito's second jinchūriki transformation.
In this form, Obito displayed a unique and highly advanced form of Yin-Yang Release which allows him to create spheres of black chakra
from the palms of his hands which can be shaped and formed into
shields, lances and spinning blades, as well as being launched against
enemies and expand to a massive size. According to Hiruzen Sarutobi, these spheres are similar in nature to Dust Release, being capable of destroying anything they come into contact with, such as flesh, steel and even ninjutsu; it was also able to halt the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation's
regenerating process. The Third noted however that that this form of
nature transformation had greater dynamic and flexibility to it and is
superior to other kekkei genkai or kekkei tōta.[101][91]
Eventually, Obito managed to regain control over his mind and
subsequently manages to tame the power of the Ten-Tails, becoming one of
few jinchūriki to accomplish such. In doing so, he underwent yet
another gruesome transformation. In this new form, his appearance
becomes near-identical to that of the Sage of the Six Paths.
The protrusions on his back now form the collar and coattails of a
haori-like coat. Two horns also sprout from his forehead; the left
smaller than the right. Additionally, he gains six magatama markings
across his chest, resembling the Sage's necklace. He also now produced
ten chakra orbs, eight of which floated behind him in a halo-like
formation, while two floated over the backs of his palms. He frequently
shaped the orb in his right hand into a shakujō, and was capable of shaping the others form into defensive barrier.[91][108] However, these orbs are incapable of nullifying senjutsu based attacks, and despite his body's durability he can be damaged by them.[109] Obito's usage of the Tailed Beast Ball.
After a drawn out battle with Naruto and his allies, Obito demonstrated his own ability to utilise multiple Tailed Beast Ball by first summoning a tree adorned with flowers similar to the one used by the Ten-Tails to focus the chakra of the ball.[110]
Later, as both Minato and Naruto continue to press him, Obito decides
it is time to move on with the Eye of the Moon Plan, accessing his own
version of the Tailed Beast Mode, by assuming the form of the Ten-Tails.[111]
Taijutsu
Obito using taijutsu against a Kiri-nin.
As a child, Obito was fairly skilled with taijutsu, though not at the
same level as Kakashi or Might Guy. After awakening his Sharingan, his
hand-to-hand abilities improved as he was better able to read and now
even predict his opponents movements to the point that he was able to
effectively counter attacks from Kakkō, an experienced Iwa-nin.[112] He also displayed skill in coordinated attacks alongside Kakashi using his Sharingan.[112]
Later on, his skill in this area saw some growth, enough to outmatch
and subdue opponents such as the various Kiri-nin he fought after Rin's
death. In his adulthood, Obito was able to fight against two of Danzō's most skilledninja in Root simultaneously and defeat them[113][114], as well as go up against his former friend Kakashi, who is also skilled in taijutsu.[115] He mostly achieves this by using his hand-to-hand combat in tandem with his Sharingan and space-time technique to allow opponents to phase through him and then quickly counter using the elements of surprise and confusion.
He also displayed great physical strength as seen when he threw
Kakashi a few feet away so he wouldn't be crushed by a giant boulder.
Due to his artificial body, Obito's physical strength was increased
significantly. He was able to crack a massive boulder shortly after his
rehabilitation,[116] strangle a Konoha ANBU to death,[117] easily stop a slash from Suigetsu's Kubikiribōchō with his artificial right arm in the manga (with his left arm in the anime) without injuring himself,[118][119] and hold Konan off the ground by her throat,[120]
all while using only one hand. Obito has also developed a near-complete
immunity to pain, enough to emerge almost unfazed from sustaining
massive damage from Konan's mass of exploding tags[121] or from Naruto's Rasengan.[122]
He also survived being impaled through the chest with a
lighting-infused kunai by Kakashi and on top of that being slashed
across the chest by Minato shortly after.[123][124]
Obito has displayed a high level of speed, even without his
Kamui. He had quick reflexes and a fast reaction time, as he was able to
get rid of a trap that was sprung on his team.[125]
However, this was not always a good thing as seen when he pre-empted
Might Guy's attack as a child but got distracted by choking on his candy
and was knocked out by Guy instead.[126]
During his encounter with Kakkō he displayed enough speed to intercept
the Iwa-nin's attacks, creating an opening for Kakashi to attack. He
also displayed speed against the Kirigakure ninja he fought, closing
distances quickly and landing a series of swift blows and punches before
any of them could react.[127] As an adult, Obito's agility was great enough that he was able to keep up with Naruto in his Nine-Tails Chakra Mode.[128]
Ninjutsu
Nature Transformation
Obito using Fire Release: Blast Wave Wild Dance.
As a member of the Uchiha clan, Obito is well-versed in Fire Release techniques, which he was able to use quickly, as seen during a mission where he demonstrated in a fast use of the Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique.[129] In the anime, Obito displayed the ability to conceal shuriken in multiple small fireballs.[130] He can use his space—time techniques to enhance his powerful Fire Release: Blast Wave Wild Dance increasing its already considerable range.[131]
As an adult, his Fire Release prowess developed greatly, with his
techniques being of the same size and scale of that of his teacher, Madara Uchiha, a master of Fire Release techniques.[132] Obito skewering two Kiri-nin with Wood Release.
Obito gained the ability to use Wood Release after acquiring artificial limbs created from Hashirama Senju's cells.[13]
His skill with this kekkei genkai was shown during his assault on
several Kirigakure-nin after Rin's death. He can use this skill to
produce sharp branches from his arms to impale enemies.[133] He could use the Wood Release: Cutting Technique, which allowed him to use wood projectiles which multiplied inside a victim's body once stabbed by them.[134] At one point he brought out massive tangled roots from ground which viciously crushed the Kiri-nin caught in-between them.[134] Obito could also produce smaller roots from one of his arms, and use them to restrain and constrict his opponents.[135]
Using Hashirama's cells and Madara's assistance, Obito could
connect and control (albeit with difficulty) a tailed beast as powerful
as the Ten-Tails.[136][137] Aside from the Wood Release, Obito can presumably use its two component elements: earth and water. He has shown an aptitude with the former element as seen when he burrowed and moved underground to spread Deidara's bombs across a battlefield to create a literal minefield[138] and also to create various holes and move quickly through the field.
Bukijutsu
Obito using his gunbai against Might Guy.
As an adult, Obito has been shown wielding various weapons throughout the series. During the Fourth Shinobi World War he began carrying the war fan
that Madara Uchiha was known to use during his life, which he uses in
similar fashion to a mace. Attached to the gunbai was a chain that was
connected to Obito, which also allows him to use the fan much like a
flail, as an alternate means of attacking and defending, as well as a
method to get within proximity to absorb his enemies. The gunbai is also
extremely durable, enough to block a Rasengan without any damage to it.[40] With this weapon, he was able to hold his own against Naruto in his Nine-Tails Chakra Mode and Might Guy, a taijutsu master in conjunction.[139][140]
In his fight with Minato Namikaze,
he used a long chain attached to braces on his wrist, resembling
shackles. They were used in conjunction with his ability to become
intangible, first by allowing the adversary to harmlessly pass through
his body before solidifying once again as they emerge from the other
side, restraining them with the trailing chain.[141] Just before the Uchiha clan massacre, when meeting with Itachi, Obito was seen carrying a sword at his waist[142][143]
implying he is versed in kenjutsu. He is also willing to use makeshift
objects as weapons, as seen when he used a simple pipe to impale Konan, and in the anime use it to skilfully block a flurry of her Paper Shuriken.[144]
Upon first activating his Mangekyō Sharingan and Wood Release techniques, there were multiple chakra receivers
among the branches that extended off his right side. After releasing
the two techniques however, the receivers seemed to have vanish along
with them.[134] After implanting Nagato's
Rinnegan, Obito displayed a wider use of the chakra receivers. By
implanting a single chakra receiver within the left breast of the former
jinchūriki, Obito was able to control and manipulate them entirely as well as force them to adopt their jinchūriki transformations at will. He also has giant stakes, used to stab enemies and produce chakra chains that can restrain a tailed beast.[145] During his battle against Kakashi, Obito also used the blade version of these rods, producing one from the palm of his hand.[146]
Shurikenjutsu
Obito ejects multiple shuriken from a separate dimension.
As an Uchiha, Obito is proficient in the use of shuriken techniques and wields a set of giant shuriken of varying sizes (from the size of handheld ones, to ones larger than a full-grown person) stored in the other dimension,
which he can instantly bring out, by using his Kamui's spiraling
distortion to launch them at a high rotational speed, which adds an
element of surprise to the attack and gives the opponent minimal time to
react accordingly.[147] He also uses them as close-range melee weapons against Kakashi, for both stabbing and slashing.[148] He also has a set of giant kunai, which he uses in an identical fashion in conjunction with his dōjutsu.[149]
Dōjutsu
Sharingan
Obito's Sharingan.
When Obito first awakened his Sharingan it already had two tomoe and he was able to take immediate advantage of it despite his inexperience.[150] His eye gained three tomoe after witnessing Rin's death, moments before his Mangekyō Sharingan awakened.[151] After giving up his original left eye to Kakashi, Obito obtained a new left Sharingan eye and has multiple Sharingan placed in storage
should he need them. As an adult, Obito seems to be able to keep his
Sharingan active at all times with minimal drain on his chakra levels.
He can use his Sharingan to place individuals under genjutsu, such as forcing Konan to revealing the whereabouts of Nagato's body,[152] and trapping both Fū and Torune in a genjutsu for a considerable amount of time.[153] He also battled his former friend Kakashi, another skilled Sharingan user in a genjutsu duel to a standstill.[154][155]
Like Madara, Obito can use his Sharingan to place tailed beasts
under his control. While this control can be complete when used on a
single target, when cast on multiple ones, it becomes increasingly
difficult to maintain said control, allowing the beasts to temporarily
break free in certain instances.[156][157] Obito can also perform Izanagi, a technique the Uchiha deemed a kinjutsu
since the user's Sharingan is stricken with blindness and sealed away
forever. While there are normally limits on how long Izanagi can remain
active, Obito used Hashirama's DNA to extend the length of his Izanagi,
allowing him to keep it going for at least ten minutes while only losing
one of his replacement left eyes.[158]
Mangekyō Sharingan
Obito's Mangekyō Sharingan.
Obito awakened his Mangekyō Sharingan after witnessing Rin's death at the hands of Kakashi.[151]
The eye itself, naturally, has the same design as Kakashi's and is
reminiscent of a pin-wheel. It is through this dōjutsu that he is able
to perform his space-time ninjutsu, Kamui.[159]
Uniquely, Obito does not appear to suffer from the Mangekyō-induced
blindness, inspite of his extensive use of the technique throughout the
years, though the reason for this remains unknown.
This ability grants Obito the use of two distinct abilities:
teleportation, and another best described as "intangibility". As the
first part of this technique, the eye serves as a gateway to another dimensional space,
which he can instantly send parts of his body to and bring back from.
This causes him to seem "intangible" in the original dimension; when
struck, attacks pass right through him, though he sometimes pretends to
be hurt or cry out in pain to toy with his opponents.[160]
Due to this, Obito favours using his intangibility for defensive
purposes, by letting his opponents and their techniques phase through
him and absorbing them while they are off-guard. This became such a key
element in Obito's fighting style that he rarely resorts to more
traditional forms of ninjutsu. He can also extend this intangibility to
whatever he's touching at the time.[161] Obito using his space–time ninjutsu, Kamui.
The second part of Obito's Kamui is to travel long distances within
relatively short time-spans. While he is usually seen using this ability
on himself, avoiding attacks rather than relying on his intangibility,
he can teleport anyone by making physical contact with them; when being
transported in this way, the target appears to be sucked into his right
eye. The chakra signatures of those that have been teleported completely
vanish as they enter another dimension.[162]
Once teleported into Kamui's dimension, the targets are forced to stay
there until Obito chooses to release them. Despite not always being
present, Obito can keep his targets under genjutsu while they are confined inside this pocket dimension and thus, keep them incapacitated for extended durations.[163]
However, Obito must remain solid while this teleportation is used, and
it takes longer to absorb himself than it does someone or something
else.[164] Minato Namikaze commended Obito's space-time ninjutsu, dubbing it more versatile than both his own and Tobirama Senju's.[165]
He is capable of combining his fire techniques with the spiral
distortion generated by his Kamui technique to produce a powerful vortex of fire.[131]
He can also use his Kamui to unleash various weapons from the eye's
pocket dimension, using the warping distortion to greatly increased
their launch speed.
However Obito's Kamui does have some flaws to it: he must become
solid in order to interact with others, leaving him susceptible to
counter-attack when he does so. He can only make himself continuously
intangible for about five minutes.[166]
However the only reliable counter to this technique has been Kakashi's
own Kamui, ironically used by the counterpart left eye; objects and
people warped away by Kamui are sent to the same dimension where can
then harm the part of Obito that may exist in the other dimension at the
same time.[167]
However, because of the fact that the eyes share the same dimensional
void, Obito is "immune" in a sense, to Kakashi's use of this technique
on him, as he can freely move between the dimensions.[168] Obito later noticed that after becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki, he could no longer "travel through dimensions".[169]
Rinnegan
Obito's Rinnegan.
Following the loss of his left Sharingan due to his use of Izanagi in the battle against Konan, Obito implanted Madara's Rinnegan, taken from Nagato's corpse, into his left eye socket in preparation for the Fourth Shinobi World War.[170]
With the Rinnegan, Obito gains a series of abilities, such as the
ability to see chakra, the potential to master all five forms of nature transformation and the ability to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path.
Obito using chakra chains to restrain Kokuō.
As a wielder of the Rinnegan, Obito also has access to the Six Paths Technique, a series of unique ninjutsu skills. On one occasion he mentioned that he could use the Human Path technique to extract information from an individual, though the process would kill the target. He has also displayed extensive use of the Outer Path ability, where by combining it with the Demonic Statue, he was able to reseal the tailed beasts into their respective jinchūriki and use their powers freely as well as create chakra chains
that he used to suppress their power. Obito is able to use the chains
to drag the beasts he controls to reseal them instantly inside the
Statue.[171] He can use the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique
which can revive an individual at the cost of his own life, which he
noted to be key to reviving Madara as a living individual and not a
reincarnated body. Like other users of the Outer Path, Obito can manifest chakra receivers out of the palm of his hand.
Obito makes use of the Six Paths of Pain, with his particular Paths being chosen from the reincarnatedjinchūriki,
embedding chakra receivers in their bodies which allows him to
manipulate them. Each one also has the same eyes as he does (a right
Sharingan and a left Rinnegan), allowing him to see what they see and
coordinate their movements. This enhances the jinchūriki's original
abilities, allowing them to perform a series of collaborative and
precise attacks. However, due to the immense chakra consumption that is
required, he does not have the Paths use the individual skills granted
by the Six Paths Technique.[172]
Body Modifications
Obito's arm oozes a white substance as he separates it from his body.
After being found by Madara Uchiha, Obito had the right side of his
body, which had been crushed by the boulder, was artificially
reconstructed using the same material as that of White Zetsu and its many clones.[13] Obito's artificial body enables him to replace dismembered limbs on several occasions.[173][174][175]
While only the right side was initially remade, by the time of his
fight against Minato, it appeared as his entire body had been modified,
as his left hand was damaged and replaced in the same fashion as the
right.[176] Uniquely, Obito's body oozes a white substance instead of blood.[173]
Due to his body being rebuild by Hashirama's DNA, his physical
strength and durability were greatly magnified. This artificial body
also possess noticeable regenerative capabilities, as Obito's arm and
shoulder was able to repair itself from the damage caused by Naruto's Rasengan within minutes.[177]
After becoming a jinchūriki, Obito's regenerative power seems to have
grown, as he was able to heal almost instantly from the damage caused by
a wind-enhanced Amaterasu attack, as well after having been struck by a senjutsu-empowered Rasengan, which had managed to bypass his defences.[178] This body also enables Obito to survive without the need for food or water.[179] Due to the presence of Hashirama's DNA in his body, Obito gained the Wood Releasekekkei genkai.
Due to these augmentations, Obito also gained an immense increase
in vitality and chakra reserves as a result, allowing him to achieve
various chakra-consuming feats. Such include his constant use of his Mangekyō Sharingan,
with no side effects to his chakra or health, even when used in
conjunction with other techniques, allowing such techniques to become
regular and signature moves for him in battle. His robust reservoir also
allows him to summon large and very powerful creatures such as Kurama,[180], items such as the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path,[181][182][183] as well as provide him with the basis required to control six fully transformed jinchūriki at once.[184]
Intelligence
As an adult, Obito is an observant and sharp thinker, capable of
reading through deception. He can formulate complicated plans well in
advance and accurately predict how others will act in a given set of
circumstances. Even on the rare occasions where Obito is caught
off-guard he is capable of creating counter-strategies while maintaining
a calm and composed demeanour. He is flexible when the situation calls
for it, using alternate means to achieve his objective when his original
plan fails. His mental endurance is also noteworthy, as he was able to
break free from Ino's Mind Body Switch Technique within mere seconds,[185] resist Madara's mental control,[186] and even overpower the Ten-Tails' mind.[187]
Due to Madara's tutelage, Obito gained a vast knowledge of the
ninja world, which allows him to almost immediately identify most forms
of ninjutsu and counter them if necessary.[188][189][190][191] His knowledge extends far enough back through history that he knows of the existence and secrets of the Sage of the Six Paths.[192][193][194][195]
Obito, in his adulthood, is also shown as a master of
manipulation and psychological warfare, being able to exploit an
individual's beliefs and convictions into serving his purposes through
direct or indirect manners such as Nagato, Kisame and Sasuke. He was
able to fully assume the identity of Madara Uchiha to manipulate the
entire shinobi world into a war due to their fear of the legendary
Uchiha's abilities. When questioned about why he was going about things
in such a roundabout manner by Ōnoki — someone who had witnessed his
power first hand — he noted that the fight between "himself" and
Hashirama, had left him a shell of his former self.[196] In battle, his efforts are geared into breaking an enemy both mentally and emotionally.
Other Skills
Obito using Uchiha Flame Formation.
Aside from his proficiency on all major ninja sets, Obito is also
versed in a few other unorthodox skills. He has displayed high-level
surgical skills, able to remove, preserve, and transplant eyes into
himself and others. He is also versed in barrier techniques, using the Uchiha Flame Formation to protect the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path, as well as the Six Red Yang Formation to prevent the Allied Shinobi Forces from escaping his Tailed Beast Ball.[197][110] He also displayed the ability to perform a series of well-coordinated attacks with his former teacher and partner Madara Uchiha.[198] Obito can also sense chakra, as he was able to predict how Sasuke was about to attack him with Amaterasu.[199] He is also versed in sealing techniques that can separate a tailed beast from its jinchūriki[200] or seal a tailed beast to create a jinchūriki, even with a beast such as the Ten-Tails.[90]
Stats
These stats reflect Obito's abilities at the time of his "death":
After the death of Sasori, Tobi and Zetsu collect Sasori's ring from his body, which Tobi believes will allow him to join the Akatsuki. Finding Deidara
after he and Zetsu find the ninja's disembodied ring arm, Tobi's
refusal to return the severed limb resulted in him being strangled by
Deidara's legs.
Hidan and Kakuzu Arc
Tobi was seen with the other Akatsuki members to seal the Two-Tails
from Yugito Nii, previously captured by Hidan and Kakuzu, to the Demonic
Statue.
Three-Tails Arc
Main article: Three-Tails Tobi and Deidara's début as a team.
Soon after being accepted into the Akatsuki as Sasori's replacement,
Tobi is made Deidara's new partner while being assigned to capture the Three-Tails.
In the anime, they stopped to get a bite to eat at a dango shop during
their search. Deidara anxiously waits for Tobi to remove his mask so
that he could see what he looked like underneath, but Tobi turned away,
hiding his face. When they finish eating they split up. Tobi eventually
finds Konoha ninja using the Four-Corner Sealing Barrier
and deduces that that the technique was to seal the Three-Tails. He
informs Deidara of his discovery and they approach and kill the two ANBU put in charge of the sealing.
When they locate the Three-Tails, Tobi tries to convince Deidara
to fight it in his place. While the Three-Tails chases Tobi, Deidara
used one of his bombs on it while it was distracted. The rest of the
battle goes unseen. After they defeated the Three-Tails, Tobi claims
responsibility for the beast's capture, saying his technique was
flawless and that it made sense to assign him to the mission. Deidara
retorted that Tobi wouldn't have got far without his clay. Tobi fell
asleep after making another cheeky comment, much to the anger of
Deidara, who "woke him up" by detonating a clay bomb next to him.
When they get the Three-Tails to an Akatsuki base, the Akatsuki
members convene and seal it. When they are done they also seal the Two-Tails (the Two-Tails is sealed before the Three-Tails' capture in the anime).
Itachi Pursuit Arc
Tobi vows to remind the world of "Madara Uchiha's" power.
When the Akatsuki later receives news that Sasuke Uchiha had defeated Orochimaru,
Tobi follows a furious Deidara in his intent to kill Sasuke. When they
track him down, Tobi greets Sasuke as a distraction while Deidara
attacks with his bombs. Sasuke survives the blast and proceeds to run
his sword straight through Tobi. After collapsing, Tobi stands up,
unfazed yet complimenting Sasuke for the speed of his attack. Tobi
provides support to Deidara for the battle's duration, but Sasuke keeps
the advantage. Deidara ultimately resorts to using C0
in an effort to kill Sasuke at the loss of his own life. Though Zetsu
reported Tobi's demise to the other Akatsuki members, prompting Pain to remark that he was easily replaceable, Tobi survived. Meeting Pain and Konan in Amegakure shortly afterwards, Tobi instructs the former to capture Naruto so they can extract the Nine-Tails from him.
Tobi slightly taking off his mask.
Seeing a use in Sasuke as Itachi would die soon, Tobi uses his childish facade to hinder the the Konoha ninja
sent to find either brother. When Zetsu then arrived to inform him that
Sasuke had killed Itachi, having expected that outcome, Tobi gets to
Sasuke before the Konoha ninja, taking him away. Tobi tended to Sasuke's
wounds and, when he woke up, offered to tell him about Itachi. Tobi
tried to befriend Sasuke by removing his mask and revealing his
Sharingan, something that triggered Itachi's Amaterasu in Sasuke's left
eye against Tobi. Tobi retreats into the darkness while he puts out the
flames, returning with his mask back on to muse about how Itachi never
ceased to amaze him.[48]
After Sasuke asked what he was talking about, Tobi revealed that Itachi
had most likely set it up so that the sight of his Sharingan would
trigger the Amaterasu he had sealed within Sasuke. After Sasuke
complained that he was making no sense, Tobi revealed that it was to
protect him, and, when Sasuke still didn't believe him, Tobi introduced
himself as Madara Uchiha. He proceeds to reveal to Sasuke the Uchiha
clan's history, Itachi's secret life, and the true reason for the Uchiha Clan Massacre;
however, he lied about his involvement with the Nine-Tailed Demon Fox's
attack, saying instead that it was a random natural attack. Sasuke,
regretting that he had killed Itachi now that he knew the truth,
resolved to destroy Konoha for forcing Itachi into the life he had
lived.
Tobi meeting with Taka.
Tobi convinced Sasuke and the other members of Taka
to start working with Akatsuki, the two groups having Konoha's
destruction as a mutual goal. Before they could do that, however, he
stated that Akatsuki needed the two remaining tailed beasts. Since Pain
was still working on capturing Naruto, Tobi sent Taka to capture the Eight-Tails.
After Taka left, Tobi spoke with Zetsu, discussing Akatsuki's actions
up to that point. He went on to say that, although they had lost five
talented ninja in Akatsuki, all of their efforts had brought him closer
to "making Sasuke his".
After Taka captured the Eight-Tails' jinchūriki, Killer B,
Sasuke gave him to Tobi for Akatsuki to seal. During the extraction
process, it was revealed to be a fake: a severed tentacle made to look
like Killer B. Tobi remains silent while Kisame
- recently made aware of Tobi's identity as the previous Mizukage -
commented that Sasuke had been fooled in his attempt to capture the
jinchūriki. The tentacle does not go to waste as Tobi seals the
tentacle, a fragment of the Eight-Tails' chakra, into the Demonic Statue
of the Outer Path.
Five Kage Summit Arc
Irritated upon learning of Nagato's failure to capture Naruto and wasting the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique
on the Konoha villagers he killed, Tobi sent Kisame to capture Killer B
while he catches up to Taka while they were half-way to Konoha. Telling
them that Konoha is already in ruins, Tobi convinces Sasuke to follow
Zetsu to the Kage Summit in the Land of Iron to kill Danzō, the acting Hokage
and a conspirator in the Uchiha's assassination. However, intending to
have Sasuke take the Kage hostage for him to facilitate his plans, Tobi
instructs Zetsu to expose Taka's presence to the Kage.
Tobi arrives to talk to Naruto.
Finding Naruto also in the Land of Iron, Tobi decides to personally
confront the youth to figure out how he caused Nagato to have a change
of heart, but was caught by Kakashi Hatake and Yamato. Rather than fight, Tobi told them about the Sage of the Six Paths,
the truth of the Uchiha clan, and Sasuke's descent into darkness
because of him. They doubt the validity of what he told them, but he
persevered while proclaiming that Naruto and Sasuke are destined to
fight someday before disappearing.
As Sasuke was about to be killed by the Kage, Tobi rescued him. He sends Sasuke away, sending Karin
with him to heal his injuries. Though disappointed that Sasuke was not
more of a match for the Kage, Tobi was nevertheless happy by the
development of Sasuke's Mangekyō Sharingan in awakening Susanoo. He then
explained his Eye of the Moon Plan
to the Kage and those in attendance, concluding by asking for their
support by giving him Killer B and Naruto. The Kage refused, so he
declared war on them all before disappearing.
Tobi fighting Fū and Torune.
Tobi intercepted Danzō while he was fleeing the Summit, fighting his bodyguards Fū and Torune. Although forced to remove his arm because of Torune's nano-sized, venomous insects,
Tobi was easily able to dispose of the two before teleporting Sasuke
and Karin to their location so he can honour his promise to the former.
Tobi observed the battle and was glad when Sasuke is finally able to
fully develop Susanoo. When Sasuke emerges victorious, Tobi approaches the dying Danzō to take Shisui's eye, which was implanted in Danzō's right eye-socket. Danzō activated the Reverse Four Symbols Sealing Technique
in an attempt to take Tobi and Sasuke with him, but they are able to
get out of range in time. Tobi collects Danzō's body and suggests that
Sasuke take some time to rest.
Tobi fixing his arm.
At his lab,
Tobi discovers that Danzō destroyed Shisui's Sharingan before he died.
Cursing him, Tobi gets a new arm and makes plans to retrieve Nagato's Rinnegan to prepare for war. Before he can leave, Zetsu informs him of Sasuke's fight with his former team-mates.
Arriving after Sasuke clashed with Naruto, Tobi advises that Sasuke
come with him to as they can deal with Naruto another time. Once back at
the Mountains' Graveyard, at the youth's insistence, Tobi implants Itachi's eyes into Sasuke before leaving him to recuperate.
Confining the Jinchūriki Arc
Tobi being blackmailed into an alliance with Kabuto.
Tobi is soon afterwards confronted by Kabuto,
who arrived after mastering his new powers. Remembering that Kabuto was
once an Akatsuki spy, Tobi tries to kill him for betraying the
organisation. Kabuto responds by using the Summoning: Impure World Resurrection to revive five deceased members of Akatsuki (Sasori, Deidara, Itachi, Nagato, and Kakuzu), a demonstration of the sort of "pawns" he can offer Tobi in the approaching Fourth Shinobi World War.
In exchange, Kabuto wants Sasuke. When Tobi asked what would happen if
he refused, Kabuto responds by summoning a sixth coffin containing Madara Uchiha.
Horrified that Kabuto knows that Madara is actually dead, Tobi is
forced to accept an alliance, but sets the condition that Sasuke will
not be turned over until after the war. Kabuto agrees and sends the
summons away. Still uneasy about the revived Madara, Tobi escorts Kabuto
into his hideout so he can assess his battle strength and reformulate
his plans for war.
Tobi confronts Konan.
Tobi later infiltrates Amegakure to acquire Nagato's corpse before he immediately confronted by Konan. Tobi tries to buy back her cooperation by informing her of his involvement in Yahiko's
creation of Akatsuki and Nagato's receiving the Rinnegan, but she
doesn't believe him. Konan turns into paper and engulfs Tobi, hoping to
use the exploding tags
mingled with her paper in order to sacrifice herself to kill him.
However, realising her intent, Tobi is able to warp the explosion away -
saving both of their lives at the cost of his right arm with the upper
part of his mask is broken. After Konan answers his question while she
and Nagato placed their faith in Naruto, Tobi finds himself surrounded
by six hundred billion paper explosives.
Konan than detonates them all over a period of ten minutes, longer than
the five-minute period that Tobi can remain intangible for.
Tobi's broken mask revealing both his Sharingan.
However, to escape the death trap Konan laid out for him, Tobi sacrifices his left Sharingan to use Izanagi
and survive the attack while losing the upper left side of his mask in
the process. Taking advantage of Konan lowering her guard and thinking
she succeeded, Tobi uses a pipe to impale her from behind. Konan
attempts a final defensive strike, proclaiming that Naruto will lead
them to peace, but Tobi grabs her by the neck as he retorts that he will
embrace being the "darkness" that crushes Naruto's "light". He places
her under a genjutsu
to force her to reveal Nagato's location and adds that she will die
when the illusion ends. When Tobi finds Nagato's body, interpreting the
corpse's smile as his continued betrayal, he closes the eyes before
teleporting the body away to the other dimension.
Once back at his hideout, Tobi replaces his blinded Sharingan
with one of Nagato's Rinnegan while getting a new arm, a new outfit, and
a new mask. Kabuto complimented him on his efforts to gain new eyes,
but Tobi rebuffed the statement, claiming that they were his to begin
with. When they receive intel from Kisame about the current location of
the jinchūriki, Tobi decides to go capture them. Kabuto offers to go
instead if he is allowed to see the White Zetsu Army,
adding that he can makes the army stronger if he is allowed to study
one of the Zetsu clones. Tobi complies. Much to Tobi's displeasure,
Kabuto fails in capturing either Naruto or B, but does bring back Yamato. After Kabuto convinces him to use a genjutsu and the proper drug to extract intel from Yamato instead of using the Human Path ability, Tobi allows Kabuto to use their captive to strengthen the White Zetsu army.
Shinobi World War Arc
Tobi's forces mobilise.
When preparations are complete the thousands of Zetsu and many of
Kabuto's reincarnated ninja mobilise for war. In the confusion, Kabuto
also captures Anko Mitarashi. Tobi suspects that Kabuto led her to their hideout and believes Kabuto plans to have Akatsuki and the Allied Shinobi Forces
destroy each other. Although confident that this will not happen, Tobi
orders Kabuto to kill Anko. Kabuto refuses on the grounds that he can
use Anko to make the Summoning: Impure World Resurrection stronger,
something that is in Tobi's best interests.
To alleviate his unease, Tobi demands that Kabuto demonstrate the
technique and tell him how to defeat it. To that end he brings out Fū and Torune,
who have been kept under genjutsu since they were captured. He breaks
Torune's neck and tells Kabuto to use Fū as a sacrifice to resurrect
him. Kabuto does what is asked of him. When Zetsu later informs Tobi
that Naruto and B are headed to the battlefield, Tobi decides to finally
join the fray. He goes to the location of the First Division where he summons the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. While the Statue decimates the Division, Tobi seeks out the Benihisago and the Kohaku no Jōhei, which contain the Gold and Silver Brothers. Darui and Shikamaru
conclude he plans to make use of the brothers' Nine-Tails chakra and
try to stop him. He compliments them on guessing his intentions and has
the Statue attack them while he escapes with the two items.
Tobi's Six Paths of Pain.
As dawn breaks on the following day, Tobi stands behind his own Six Paths of Pain, comprised from the deceased jinchūriki.
Tobi leads the Six Paths towards Killer B and Naruto. Naruto headbutts
Tobi as soon as they meet, to which Tobi only responds by pointing out
that Naruto couldn't even scratch his mask. Naruto notices his new
Rinnegan and remarks that it is the same as the "other" Madara's.
Realising that Kabuto has revealed his secret, Tobi quietly curses
Kabuto before shedding his Madara-identity, embracing the role of
"nobody".
Tobi emerges from underground and orders the jinchūriki to attack.
Tobi has his Six Paths engage Naruto and a transformed Killer B. B devastates the area in an attempt to force Tobi away while he seals
the six jinchūriki, which Tobi counters by having the jinchūriki enter
Version 2-like forms. As the jinchūriki overwhelm Naruto and B, Tobi
takes advantage of Naruto's distraction and nearly captures him, only to
be parried by Might Guy and Kakashi Hatake. In the confusion of their appearance, the Five-Tails breaks free of Tobi's control but he promptly subdues it. He then forces the Four-Tails and Six-Tails
to fully transform in an attempt to take control of the battle. The
Four-Tails is able to swallow Naruto, leading Tobi to believe that
Naruto is finally out of commission. Instead, the Four-Tails manages to
communicate to Naruto how Tobi is controlling it. Naruto escapes from
its mouth, locates the chakra receiver embedded in the Four-Tails' flesh, and removes it.
Tobi moving on with his plan.
With the Four-Tails free, Tobi quickly summons the Demonic Statue of
the Outer Path to reseal the beast. He has the remaining jinchūriki
transform into their respective tailed beasts to try and finally bring
the situation under his control. Despite the overwhelming power of the
five tailed beasts, Naruto, working in full cooperation with the
Nine-Tails, is able to neutralise all of them and free them from Tobi's
influence. Like the Four-Tails, Tobi seals them back into the Statue.
Despite the setbacks, Tobi remains confident that he will emerge
victorious.
Sometime later, the revived bodies of the jinchūriki, having been
kept restrained by a transformed Killer B, are released from the
effects of the Impure World Resurrection, causing them to once again
become lifeless corpses. As this could only mean that Kabuto has failed,
Tobi realises that time is running out. With no other option he tosses
the Benihisago and the Kohaku no Jōhei into the Demonic Statue's mouth
which, in addition to the Eight-Tails' tentacle from the fake Killer B,
completes the set of the nine tailed beasts, initiating the Ten-Tails' revival.
Ten-Tails Revival Arc
Tobi struck by Naruto's teleported Rasengan.
While the Demonic Statue undergoes its regeneration onto the
Ten-Tails, Tobi protects it from Naruto, B, Guy, and Kakashi. Despite
their combined efforts they are unable to get past Tobi or damage him.
Tobi is even able to turn some of their own attacks against them, such
as a lightning-infused kunai that Kakashi is forced to send away with Kamui.
After this latter exchange, however, Kakashi notices that Tobi's mask
takes damage. Unable to attribute the damage to any of their attacks,
Kakashi tests a theory: after Tobi erects a barrier
around the Statue, Naruto tries to hit him with a Rasengan. When the
attack appears to pass through Tobi, Kakashi hits the Rasengan with
Kamui, causing damage to Tobi's arm. Kakashi concludes that his Kamui
and Tobi's Space–Time Ninjutsu share the same dimension;
that attacks sent to the dimension at the same moment that Tobi has
transported his body parts there for safety will do damage to Tobi.
Tobi's mask being destroyed by Naruto.
Now that they have a strategy to use against Tobi, Naruto, B, Guy,
and Kakashi begin to coordinate their efforts. One of Naruto's shadow clones attacks Tobi, but the attack appears to fail and the clone disappears. The real Naruto attacks immediately afterwards with a Tailed Beast Ball,
which Tobi avoids by retreating to the other dimension. There he finds
Naruto's shadow clone waiting for him, having been sent there by
Kakashi's Kamui. Before he has a chance to react he is hit in the face
with a Rasengan, shattering his mask. His face revealed, Kakashi and Guy
recognise him as their old comrade, Obito Uchiha. Guy, surprised with
Obito's presence, wonders how he is still alive, while Kakashi confirmed
it to be his former team-mate upon seeing both his Mangekyō Sharingan
and a visibly crushed right face. When asked how he survived, Obito
dodged the question and instead reveals his motivation; Kakashi's
inability to save Rin,
leading Obito to hate the reality they live in. As Kakashi hesitated to
continue, Naruto instead rallied ahead to stop Obito, who promptly
attacks with a fire technique. Right after Naruto intercepts the technique with Kurama's tails, Madara Uchiha arrives to Obito's side of the battlefield.
Obito vs. Kakashi.
Striking up a conversation as they casually ignore their opponents,
Obito is scolded for deviating from the original plan as he gives Madara
his gunbai so he deflect several of the giant chakra receiver stakes
thrown at them. Left to deal with Kakashi and Might Guy as Madara goes
after Naruto and Killer B, after remembering the events that changed his
outlook, Obito tells Kakashi that he has nothing left to say to him and
that only thing they have left is a final battle. At first, Kakashi was
more focused on getting answers that gave a vexed Obito an advantage.
But once Obito's deathblow was intercepted by Naruto, Kakashi resolved
to fight his former friend to protect his student.
Obito vs. Naruto.
As Obito questioned Kakashi's resolve, he also noted that Kakashi had used the Sharingan to perfect his Lightning Cutter
and had even awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan, but remarked that they
would see whether or not Kakashi could return from the other dimension
in his current condition. Creating a wooden branch from his right arm,
Obito attempted to incapacitate Naruto while he warped Kakashi away.
Naruto, however, headbutts Obito which sends him reeling. When Kakashi
is later thrown by Kurama, Obito takes the opportunity to warp Kakashi
away. Unbeknownst to him however, this was all part of Kurama's plan and
his opponents' two-fold attack is launched: as Naruto attacked Obito
from the real-world, Kakashi, who had been given chakra by Kurama
attacked the parts of Obito's body which had been warped to the other
dimension. When Kakashi returned from the other dimension, Obito watched
on as the Ten-Tails is revived despite Naruto and Killer B's attempt to
destroy it and heralds the end of this world.
Joining Madara atop of the Ten-Tails' head, two tendrils attached
themselves to the Uchiha to give them control over it. Wanting to cast
the Infinite Tsukuyomi immediately, Obito was dismayed when Madara
expressed wanting to test out the beast's power first. As the skirmish
continued, and Naruto saved Kakashi from a swipe of the beast's tail,
Obito began to see a bit of his younger self in Naruto. As Kakashi, Guy,
and the Eight-Tails all ran out of chakra, and stamina, Obito told
Naruto of the futility of his friends' struggle against the Ten-Tails.
As Naruto refused to give up on his dreams, Obito told him that there
was no need for that as within the dream-world, he would make Naruto Hokage.
He then had the Ten-Tails prepare and fire a Tailed Beast Ball, but
momentarily found himself affected by a presence. This was revealed to
be Ino Yamanaka's Mind Body Switch Technique which she used long enough to veer the attack off course. Obito and Madara soon found themselves shrouded in mist with all sensory
methods jammed. Lamenting the futility of this, they had the Ten-Tails
clear the mist with a powerful swing of its tail and the two men found
themselves face-to-face with the remainder of the Allied Shinobi Forces army.
Obito and Madara prepare to face off against the Allied Forces.
Deeming their efforts futile, Obito explained to Naruto that the
members of the Allied Shinobi Forces would go their separate ways when
the war ended and that someone else would eventually finish what he and
Madara began. After having his statement that there was no hope for this
world rebuffed, and being told by Naruto that the majority did not
share their ideals, Obito told the young man that he and Madara would
just simply have to exterminate everyone else. With the Alliance bearing
down on them, the two Uchiha are buffeted by a barrage of attacks which
blinded them, as well as robbed their sensory skills once again, as they tried to attack the Ten-Tails as well. With their opposition confronting them directly, as they momentarily stopped the beast's movements in super-heatedquicklime cement, Obito and Madara lamented their opposition's tedious efforts as they reveal the Ten-Tails was about to reach maturity.
As the Allied Forces attempt to attack the two Uchiha, the beast
emerges in its mature form. They both quickly realise controlling the
Ten-Tails will be harder now and use Hashirama's cells to control it
better and Obito decides it is time to show them true despair. They both
use the beast's power to level several villages until the Tailed Beast
Ball reaches the Alliances' Headquarters. The two then discuss how to
proceed with their plans and the fact that in order to become the
beast's jinchūriki, Madara required a living body which could only be
given by Obito sacrificing his own,
which was the only reason Madara did not have the beast use a Tailed
Beast Ball to eradicate the entire Alliance, leaving the legendary
Uchiha at Obito's mercy. Noting that Obito had developed quite the
attitude, Obito stated that he always had it, since he never considered
Madara an ally. With Obito deciding to teach the Allied Shinobi Forces
despair much to Madara's liking, Obito uses the beast as a medium to
fire off several wooden projectiles, sending the Alliance into a frenzy.
Obito and Madara are separated from the Ten-Tails by Lee and Naruto.
Opting for a pinpoint attack on Naruto, it is instead intercepted by Neji Hyūga,
killing him in the process. Capitalising on this, Obito used Naruto's
guilt over Neji's death against him while reminding him of the people he
already lost and the loneliness he will drown in again once all of his
friends eventually die. Though Obito put Naruto in a very perplexed
state, even asking him to join their cause, Hinata Hyūga ruined his attempted manipulation as he had the Ten-Tails attack again. With Naruto entering Tailed Beast Mode
again, Obito is shocked when the young man started dispensing the
beast's chakra to those on the battlefield. Attacking with the beast
once again, his attack is deflected and he later found himself being
controlled once more. After the Ten-Tails is immobilised as well, Obito
decried his opponents' belief that a fallen comrade should live on in
their hearts, noting that it would only fester and become a curse.
Unable to move, Madara lends Obito some of his power to
manipulate the beast but their attack deflected nonetheless. Upon
hearing Hiashi Hyūga
declare that Neji's sacrifice would not be in vain, Obito mocks him and
his clan for having a system where members were essentially locked
in cages awaiting their deaths. He and Madara are later shocked by the
Alliance's counter-attack. Obito is then separated from the Ten-Tails as
Naruto's Rasenshuriken
while phasing through him, cut off his connection to the beast, while
Rock Lee, enhanced by Kurama's chakra, severs Madara's connection with a
strong kick. With this, the two Uchiha are forced to retreat to the
ground.
Obito and Kakashi teleport themselves to Kamui's dimension.
Forced to battle the enemies directly, Obito and Madara collaborated
their attacks, which fail to kill any shinobi in the Allied Forces
thanks to the chakra cloak Naruto provided each of them. Obito chastised
Naruto again, noting that he was contradicting himself in saying that
he felt closer to his friends when they died, yet was overexerting
himself to protect them. Naruto quickly rebuffed Obito's logic, telling
him that a loner like him would not understand. As Kakashi prepared to
attempt to warp away the beast again, Obito intercepted him noting that
he was waiting for Kakashi to make another attempt. As they both use
Kamui on the other, they were warped away to Kamui's dimension.
Obito reveals his knowledge about Rin.
Upon entering Kamui's dimension, Kakashi reacted first and was prime
to strike Obito down with his Lightning Cutter, only to stop at the last
second. Surprised, Obito questioned if his friend's hesitation is
motivated by guilt about failing to keep his promise as Kakashi pleaded
with Obito to stop fighting by reminding him of who he was and that he
can return to being the child. However, Obito laughed as he clarifies he
did not start this war for them. While passing through Kakashi's
Lightning Cutter to seemingly impaling himself, he casts a genjutsu to
recreate the scene where Rin was impaled by the same technique.
Revealing that he knew the truth behind Rin's death, Obito explains that
it was the "fake" world they live in and system of the shinobi nations
that made him lose hope.
The culmination of Obito and Kakashi's battle.
Despite Kakashi's insistence that he still felt the way Naruto does,
Obito stepped back and used the illusion of his injury to clarify that
the hellish world they lived in was to blame for the hollowed man he has
become. From there, Obito tried to sway Kakashi to his views, using
illusions of his younger self and Rin to appeal to Kakashi's happier
memories. However, destroying the illusions, Kakashi refused Obito's
offer of a dream world on the grounds that it would never heal one's
pain while their reality is not all cruel as having friends eases that
suffering. Obito scoffed at Kakashi's words, saying that attachments
like that are the source of suffering, but was taken back by Kakashi who
reminds Obito of the lesson he taught him and that he will make him
accept his ideals again by force if needed. Their battle then raged on,
resulting in Obito and Kakashi stabbing each other with their respective
attacks. Calling for an end to the games, both men dispel the genjutsu they were casting and being their real battle.
Obito is "forced" to use the Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique by Madara.
This battle resulted in with Obito being mortally wounded by Kakashi's Lightning Cutter-enhanced
kunai while he had stabbed Kakashi in the side non-fatally, causing
Obito who declared that the war was not yet won to retreat to the real
world. Fleeing back to the real world fatally wounded, Madara who sensed
Obito's presence on the battlefield once again and noted that he had no
more use for Obito and solemnly expressed his regret at not being able
to fight Hashirama properly before becoming the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki.
Madara then proceeded with his plan and caused the embedded chakra receivers in Obito's body to sprout out. As the right half of Obito's body turned black, the young Uchiha is seemingly forced to use the Outer Path: Samsara of Heavenly Life Technique
in order to revive Madara. As the technique takes time to activate,
Sasuke and Naruto race towards Obito to attempt to stop him from
completing the Samsara of Heavenly Life before Obito is cut down by
Minato, who realised that he was the masked man who attacked Konoha
years prior. However, Obito managed to resist Madara's control and seal
the Ten-Tails, foiling Madara's attempt at revival in the process. Now
the beast's jinchūriki, Obito was able to destroy both the Sage Art: Gate of the Great God and Four Red Yang Formation
with ease. As Hashirama and the other Hokage noted that Obito's power
is now superior to that of the God of the Shinobi, the Uchiha used his
new-found powers to destroy large portions of Hashirama and Tobirama's
bodies.
Hashirama and Tobirama are attacked by Obito.
Obito soon found himself plastered with explosive tags planted by
Tobirama who was able to retaliate to his previous attack. As the
explosions detonate, he is shocked to find himself restrained by
Hashirama's wood clone and confronted by Tobirama once again. As the
Second noted that this technique was one created based off the fighting style for the reincarnated, Obito is bombarded by an onslaught of explosive tags. He, however, emerged from the blast unscathed as the mysterious black substance continued to protect him. Confronted by Hiruzen, Obito continued to use the substance to cut through the attacks
and ultimately destroyed the Third's body as well. Moving to attack
again, Obito is shocked when his body abnormally expanded, Minato used
the opportunity to attack him in his vulnerable state. Obito is,
however, able to counter not only Minato's attack but launch an attack
on Naruto as well. Though this attack is initially deflected by Sasuke,
Obito is able to break through Susanoo's defence and attack the two
young shinobi.
Obito seizes control over the Ten Tails.
Puzzled at what had happened when the two suddenly disappeared,
avoiding his attack in the process, Obito freed the rest of his body
before undergoing yet another unwanted modification as he struggled to
get accustomed to being the Ten-Tails' jinchūriki.
Launching an attack during that time, it becomes clear that Obito is
fighting for control of his body against the Ten-Tails and lost the aim
of this attack resulting in destroying the right side of his body.
Meanwhile in his subconscious, Obito fights to regain control of his
consciousness, focusing on a single image of his old team.
As the image was ripped apart, so was Obito ripped limb from limb until
he was finally able to subjugate the Ten-Tails' power. Emerging from
this in a new form even more reminiscent of the Sage of the Six Paths,
Obito exclaimed that he had finally taken control before attacking his
former teacher. Though Minato seemingly escaped, Obito drew his
attention to the ball of mysterious substance which he had left attached
to Minato, which had begun to glow and expand.
Naruto exposes Obito's weakness.
When Tobirama managed to return the ball to him, Obito was caught in
the explosion, but immediately resurfaced unharmed, shielded by the
mysterious substance. Countering several attacks from both Tobirama and
Minato, as well as another Scorch Release: Halo Gale Jet Black Arrow Style Zero and a Starch Syrup Gun from Gamakichi, Obito hovered into the sky, using his supreme command of Yin-Yang Release
to nullify their ninjutsu. When his former teacher, Minato, confronted
him with his former ideals and his dream to become Hokage, Obito
confronted Minato with his failure to stop both his fall and his attack
on Konohagakure sixteen years ago, and how it was from him that he
learned how pitiful the position of a Kage is. This lead Naruto to
angrily tell Obito that he should not look down on a position only
because he was unable to obtain it. With the aid of Tobirama's Flying
Thunder God technique, he then successfully strikes Obito with a Rasengan, revealing Obito's weakness against Senjutsu.
Obito presses on with the Eye of the Moon Plan.
Noting to himself as he emerged from the rubble that the Ten-Tails'
jinchūriki had a weakness such as this and his inability to proper
utilise his Kamui
technique, Obito declared that the world was coming to an end and that
it was about time that he continued the Eye of the Moon plan. Creating
an enormous tree
in the midst of the Alliance, the four flowers on the plant started to
charge a Tailed Beast Ball to attack them with. Obito then quickly traps
everyone on the battlefield within the barrier
noting that he would not allow them to escape so easily. As he wrapped
himself in the mysterious, black substance in preparation for the blow,
he decried Minato once again noting that it was the anniversary of
Minato and Kushina's death as well. His berating of Minato, however, is
greeted by Naruto's words that he would not allow the world to end.
Watching on from the safety of he mysterious black substance which had
encapsulated him at that point, Obito noted as the Alliance once again
got enveloped in Version 1 chakra cloaks that something of that low
calibre would not stop his attack. As he willed the world to disappear
and launched the balls, Obito was shocked in the aftermath to see that
there were no casualties within the barrier. As Naruto and Minato then
tried to perform a sage-enhanced Tailed Beast Ball, Obito manifested the
Ten-Tails to begin his Eye of the Moon Plan. The Ten-Tails changed into
its final form of Shinju, the god tree, whose branches sought out the
shinobi, absorbing all their chakra, killing them. Obito told the
shinobi they should rest, having suffered enough, promising their
suffering will stop with the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Obito grabs Sasuke and Naruto.
Capitalising on the shinobi's despair even more, he informed them all
that they would not be killed once they surrendered and that their
lives would be spared if they resigned themselves to their fate. Despite
the grim situation the Allied Forces faced, Naruto's resolve and
memories, transferred to his allies telepathically, restored the great army's will to fight, surprising Obito. Obito then was forced to defend himself against the senjutsu-enhanced
Naruto and Sasuke's combined attacks, becoming increasingly infuriated
with Naruto's unbreakable will. Continuing his battle with the duo,
Obito begins to outmanoeuvre the two as well as bolster his defensive
stance. As he once again gains the upper-hand on them, he takes the time
to decry Naruto's beliefs noting good will ever come out of them.
Sending the two crashing to the ground beneath him, he questioned Naruto
about why he refused to stay down; the young man's response only served
to incense Obito more.
Influence
Although he survived his presumed death during the events at the
Kanabi Bridge, both the positve and negative impact Obito has had on the
world over the whole course of the series is nothing short of
significant. Despite being Naruto Uzumaki's
most formidable adversary and the representation of the complete
opposite of his own ideals, Obito inadvertently played a critical role
in shaping Naruto into the man he is today. Having changed Kakashi's way
of thinking forever after "dying", the ideology Obito had left behind
had a profound effect on Kakashi and in turn, Naruto himself. Because
Obito had passed on his ninja way to Kakashi, Kakashi would later pass
it onto Naruto, which remains with them both to this very day. Due to
this, Kakashi considers Naruto to be the embodiment of the boy Obito
used to be. In addition, Obito was also responsible for the Nine-Tails' Attack on Konoha,
which had perhaps an even greater impact on Naruto's life, as Obito's
actions had forced the young boy to grow up with the loneliness of not
having any parents, which also played a positive role in helping to
shape Naruto for the better. These actions also had negative
repercussions as well, as it contributed to the mistrust the village had
for the Uchiha clan which eventually led them to plan a coup de'tat and attack the village, leading to the Uchiha Clan Massacre at the hands of Itachi Uchiha,
which Obito also had personally contributed to alongside Itachi. This
shows that Obito had not only played a role in shaping Naruto, but
Sasuke as well, a subtle influence that eventually continued when he
personally revealed the truth about Itachi to Sasuke many years later,
leading the young Uchiha to begin a vendetta to destroy the village.
Video Games
Obito Uchiha is a playable character in the following video games:
After being found by Madara following the events at the Kannabi Bridge, upon the elderly Uchiha revealing who he was, Obito referred to him as "my honourable forefather" (オレのご先祖, ore no gosenzo), which may mean that Obito is a direct descendant of Madara.[201]
Tobi can be translated as the i form of "to fly" (飛ぶ, tobu), or as "kite" (鳶). The latter translation connects Tobi with Taka through the Japanese proverb "a hawk born from a kite" (鳶が鷹を生む, tobi ga taka o umu), meaning that an extraordinarily gifted child can be born from ordinary parents.
One of Obito's mask as Tobi appears in the ending omake of Naruto: Shippūdenepisode 129 along with Baki's face and Haku's mask.
As Tobi, Obito appears to have a liking for dango.[202]
According to the databook(s):
Obito's favourite words were "teamwork" (チームワーク, chīmuwāku) and "comrade" (仲間, nakama).
Obito had completed 135 official missions in total: 86 D-rank, 24 C-rank, 24 B-rank, 1 A-rank, 0 S-rank.
As "Tobi", his hobby is accompanying "Deidara-senpai", and his favourite phrase is given as "secret (?)" (秘密 (?), himitsu (?)).
(To Kakashi) "Those
who break the rules are trash, but those who abandon their comrades are
worse than trash! If I'm going to be called trash either way, I'd
rather break the rules! And if that somehow makes me anything less than a
real shinobi, then I'll crush all of the so-called "real" shinobi!"[203]
(To Kakashi) "I'm about to… die… but I'll become your eye… and see the future with you."[204]
(Before his presumed death) "Just when me and Kakashi were becoming friends… I couldn't bring myself to confess to Rin… I wish I had more time with everyone…"[205]
(To Minato, in his own mind) "Minato-sensei, this, all of this… this entire world… I don't care about it anymore."[206]
(To Pain and Konan) "The true power of the Sharingan… this is Madara Uchiha's power!" (写輪眼の本当の力が… このうちはマダラの力が!, "Sharingan no hontō no chikara ga… kono Uchiha Madara no chikara ga!")[208]
(Thinking to himself) "The moment people come to know love, they run the risk of carrying hate."[209]
(To Naruto and Killer B) "The
war has already begun… My name no longer matters. You can call me by my
old name, Tobi, if you prefer. Madara, Tobi… call me whatever you want."[39]
(To Naruto and Killer B) " I'm no one… I don't want to be
anyone. All I care about is completing the Eye of the Moon Plan. This
world is completely worthless… there is nothing left in it but misery."[210]
(To Kakashi) "You've seen reality, you should be able to
understand… No wish can become true in this world. That's why I'm
pursuing the dream of infinite Tsukuyomi. I want to build a world where
heroes don't have to make pitiful excuses in front of graves."[211]
(To Naruto) "You remind me of myself… Naruto… yeah… just like when I was young… but, that'll all change with time…"[212]
(To Naruto) "…There is no such thing as a victory in this world. Hope… is merely an illusion."[213]
(To Naruto after Neji's death) "This
is what happens when you talk about hope and ideals… This is reality.
Naruto… what do you have in this reality? You have no father and mother…
your master Jiraiya is dead, and as long as you keep opposing, your
friends will die one after the other. No one that acknowledges you will
survive. And you already know what lies ahead of all this… Loneliness.
There's no need to be in this reality, come here Naruto!"[214]
(To Kakashi) "Look! There is nothing in my heart! I don't
even feel pain!! You don't have to feel guilty, Kakashi. This windhole
was opened by this hell of a world."[215]
(To Minato) "We're way past the point of lectures, wouldn't
you agree, sensei? When it came to life changing events… you were
always a step behind… I'm glad my sensei was the Hokage. Thanks to that,
it was easier for me to let my dream die… Despite being my master, you
failed to recognise your own pupil… You've always had that oblivious
nature about you, from the moment I met you... I can't help but pity
you… The hallowed martyr… shamed in front of his living son… Yes… a mere
Hokage is simply fodder compared to what I've become…"[216]
